A complimentary contemporary extension to the rear of an existing red brick house overlooking the river Nanny. On a sloping site the ground floor of the house opens out onto a viewing terrace capturing views of the glen beyond. The terrace is formed over a garage on the lower level underneath. The extension itself is a crisp white ‘box’ with sharp zinc detailing around windows and parapet. The large windows flood the new room and existing house with natural light, supplemented with a rooflight overhead. The new extension replaced a previous classic conservatory, which now provides the family with a very comfortable space that can be used all year round. The box cantilevers to the rear creating a projection that strengthens the form. This is a very interesting project from the practice’s perspective – it’s the third renovation on the same property since the 1990s.
