The idea behind this project was to replace the old traditional glass sunroom and re-design the space to incorporate the existing internal kitchen with new living and dining areas. This new space looks out over and enjoys the benefit of the existing mature garden. The new extension is south/south-west facing and avails of the afternoon and evening sunlight. The open plan room is designed with lower and higher ceiling heights – the taller space includes a high level clerestory window which allows morning sunlight into the sitting area. Although externally the roof forms are somewhat traditional the internal ceiling spaces are unusual and interesting. Overall the design of the windows and glazed walls creates an airy light filled space from dawn till dusk. Located near the seaside the building is highly insulated and draft-proofed which was immediately put to the test by Storm Ophelia and passed with flying colours.
